This Monday, we had the honor of welcoming Ben Edlund as a guest speaker in Bobby’s Graphic Novels class! Ben Edlund is best known for creating the comic book series The Tick, which has since been adapted into a cartoon series and several live action television shows. During his lecture, students were invited to ask him questions, and we learned about how he began his career, the inspiration for his characters, and about what new ideas he has for future heroes. We also got to learn about the writing and producing he’s done for television shows, including Firefly, Supernatural, and Angel. He had a great sense of humor and even drew some characters for us!
This week, students in Jennifer K.’s Mid-level Language Arts class developed and pitched a product to Kino “sharks”! They had to talk about the safety, features, and functionality of their invention to try to convince the sharks to invest in their product. The students pitched a Music Baby Brush, a Jelly Sting Keychain, a Litter Box Bed, and The Duplicator (which could duplicate anything 299 times)! After presenting, the students had to answer difficult questions about their products. They all have bright futures in business!
This week, our counselor Serena held her second annual Career Fair for our Junior High and High School students! Thank you to all the presenters who came to share their expertise with our students, which included a professor/biologist, a biomedical engineer, two performing artists, an IT specialist (and alumni!), and representatives from Pima Community College and The University of Arizona. Our students had a chance to walk around and mingle with all the presenters to learn more about different careers that might be available to them after graduation. This week, Wild at Heart came to the Kino campus to relocate three screech owls on our property. Before they hung the habitats, they were able to show our students the owls and taught them all about screech owls. Did you know that screech owls have 14 neck vertebrae? That’s double the number that humans have!
A huge thank you to Skid, our Primary and Mid-Level Science teacher, for working with Wild at Heart to make this happen for our students! He’s spent the past few months volunteering with Wild at Heart and organizing this event. We hope that the screech owls will love their new homes at Kino!
Halloween is a big deal at Kino! Homerooms spend weeks planning activities. On the morning of Halloween, students and homeroom teachers set up their activities. Then in the afternoon, all classes are cancelled for a giant all-ages Halloween party!

This year’s homerooms put on some amazing activities, including: a K-Pop Demon Hunter’s themed karaoke room, spooky s’mores, a puzzle-filled escape room, Dracula-themed skee ball, hot chocolate, giant Jenga, and a Halloween movie room. There was also a blanket fort in the loft, face painting, and lots of snacks!
